The report that split the iPhone lineup in two
New iPhones have arrived in September for many years, the whole range inside a single week. In August 2025 9to5Mac reported that the pattern would break. The standard iPhone 18 would skip the fall and land in early 2027, leaving September 2026 to the Pro models and to a foldable. Two waves instead of one. For anyone searching for a release date, the practical effect is that the cheapest new iPhone of this cycle will not exist until the following spring.
iPhone 17 arrives and sets the clock for 2026
Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 line on Tuesday 9 September 2025. Pre-orders opened Friday the 12th and the phones reached buyers on Friday the 19th. The three previous years repeat the shape: 12 September 2023, 9 September 2024, 9 September 2025, each followed by pre-orders that Friday and shipping the Friday after. That rhythm is the most reliable tool anyone has for predicting when the iPhone 18 Pro goes on sale, and every 2026 forecast is built on it.
Launch day, ten days after the keynote
The iPhone 17 reached stores on Friday 19 September 2025. Apple's fall range that year ran to four models: iPhone 17, the thin iPhone Air, and two Pro sizes. Demand showed up later in the accounts, when Apple reported a March-quarter iPhone revenue record and named the iPhone 17 lineup as the reason. That matters for 2026, because a record base year raises the number the iPhone 18 Pro has to beat, and Apple sets its September-quarter guidance against it.
Three unreleased iPhone designs surface at once
MacRumors reported on 22 October 2025 that leaked design information covered three unannounced iPhones at the same time. One detail stood out: a structural glass mid-frame for the foldable, meant to hold the panel flat and cut the visible crease. The same reporting described a colour filter-on-encapsulation layer and a circular polariser module to improve colour purity and light transmission. Component leaks arrive eleven months early because display and frame decisions get locked long before software does.
Under-display Face ID and a camera that changes its aperture
AppleInsider pulled the iPhone 18 Pro rumours together on 19 December 2025 around two changes. Face ID moves under the display, shrinking the Dynamic Island. The 48-megapixel main camera gains a variable aperture, a mechanical iris that adjusts how much light reaches the sensor. Phone cameras have used fixed apertures and software blur for a decade. A moving iris gives real control over depth of field and low-light exposure, and no iPhone has shipped one.
The A20 moves to a 2-nanometre process
Reporting in January 2026 put the iPhone 18 Pro on Apple's A20 chip, built on TSMC's 2nm process instead of the 3nm generation that carried the A17 through the A19. Coverage cites roughly 15 percent more speed and about 30 percent better power efficiency against the A19. Those are supplier and analyst figures rather than Apple's, so treat them as estimates until Apple puts its own numbers on a slide in September.
Somebody measured the crease: under 0.15mm
In February 2026, leakers who had seen production panels put the foldable's crease depth below 0.15mm, with a crease angle under 2.5 degrees, in reporting summarised by MacRumors. No rival publishes crease measurements, so there is nothing official to compare it against. Apple's reported fix combines a liquid-metal hinge, which resists bending and denting better than titanium alloy, with the structural glass mid-frame behind the panel.
The foldable settles into a shape
By April 2026 the descriptions had converged: a book-style foldable around 7.8 inches open and 5.5 inches closed. One leaked spec sheet gives the inner panel at 7.76 inches and 2,713 x 1,920, the outer at 5.49 inches and 2,088 x 1,422. Two 48-megapixel rear lenses, no telephoto. Face ID gives way to Touch ID in the side button, because the Face ID stack will not fit in a chassis this thin.
Apple changes chief executive
On 20 April 2026 Apple announced that Tim Cook would become executive chairman of the board and that John Ternus, until then senior vice president of hardware engineering, would become chief executive. Arthur Levinson moves to lead independent director. The board approved it unanimously and the company framed it as the end point of a long-running succession process rather than a surprise. Apple posts its best March quarter ever
Apple reported fiscal Q2 2026 revenue of $111.2 billion on 30 April, up 17 percent year over year, with diluted EPS of $2.01 and more than $28 billion in operating cash flow. Tim Cook credited "extraordinary demand for the iPhone 17 lineup" for a March-quarter iPhone record. The quarter also brought the iPhone 17e, an M4 iPad Air and the MacBook Neo. The board raised the dividend to $0.27 a share and authorised another $100 billion of buybacks.
WWDC 2026: iOS 27 and a rebuilt Siri
Apple opened WWDC on Monday 8 June 2026 at Apple Park, with more than 1,000 developers, designers and students in the audience, and announced iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, tvOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27. Siri became a standalone app that keeps conversation history synced through iCloud, and Visual Intelligence was rebranded Siri Mode. Apple claimed photos open 70 percent faster and AirDrop runs 80 percent faster. Health added perimenopause and menopause tracking; CarPlay gained video apps.
OLED panels for the foldable clear approval
MacRumors reported on 22 June 2026 that Apple had approved production of the OLED panels for the foldable iPhone. Panel approval is the gate that decides whether a September ship date survives, because display yield has delayed more foldable phones than any other component. Apple reportedly shrank the foldable's display driver IC from 28nm to 16nm to cut power draw, and specified high-density battery cells to keep runtime usable in a thin body.
Hinge trouble, and a July production target
Korean outlet The Elec reported on 24 June 2026 that the foldable would enter mass production at the end of July, pushing back on claims that hinge problems would delay it. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had flagged hinge engineering as an open risk in March. Hinges are where folding phones fail, since the part has to hold the panel flat, survive years of folding and still stay thin. Two different modems, depending on where you buy
AppleInsider reported on 30 June 2026 that the iPhone 18 Pro may carry Apple's own C2 modem in international units while US models keep Qualcomm silicon, including the SDX80M and mmWave 5G parts. The same bill-of-materials leak points to a Sony IMX-905 custom sensor behind the main camera. A split modem strategy would be a first for a Pro iPhone, and it would mean two phones with the same name behaving differently on the same carrier.
Foldable output ramps toward 10 million units
MacRumors reported on 2 July 2026 that Apple had raised planned output for the foldable, called iPhone Ultra in supply-chain chatter, to around 10 million units. That is a cautious first run for a device analysts expect to start near $2,000, with some estimates reaching $2,399. A resale study published in June put the twelve-month depreciation on a $2,000 foldable at about $1,292, based on how existing folding phones hold value.
Supply-chain sources say it is already in mass production
Chinese financial outlet Cailian Press reported on 8 July 2026 that several people inside Apple's supply chain described the foldable design as locked some time earlier, with the device now in mass production and no delay expected. Ming-Chi Kuo took a narrower line: the iPhone Ultra gets unveiled the same day as the iPhone 18 Pro models, but may not go on sale alongside them. Announcement and availability are two different dates.
iOS 27 beta 4 mentions an iPhone with more than one battery
9to5Mac found a reference in the fourth iOS 27 beta, released 20 July 2026, to an unreleased iPhone with a multi-battery feature. Splitting the battery into two cells is standard in folding phones, where each half of the body carries its own pack. Strings buried in beta software rank among the better pre-launch signals, because they come out of Apple's own code rather than from a supplier, an analyst or a Weibo account.
DigiTimes: Foxconn is still making final adjustments
A DigiTimes report on 23 July 2026, summarised by MacRumors, said the foldable still faced production hurdles that left its exact launch timing undecided, even as Foxconn ran what supply-chain sources called final mass-production adjustments. Foxconn leads the device from new product introduction through to mass production. Read July's reporting together and it points one way: the September unveiling looks safe, the foldable's ship date does not.
Q3 2026: 109.4 billion dollars, and the last quarter before the phones
Apple reported fiscal Q3 2026 after the close on 30 July 2026. Revenue was 109.4 billion dollars, up 16 percent on the 94.04 billion of a year earlier, with net profit of 29.8 billion and diluted EPS of 2.02. iPhone brought in 54.3 billion and Services 30.7 billion. It was the strongest June quarter Apple has had, with double-digit growth across iPhone, Mac and Services and in every geography, and June-quarter records for EPS and operating cash flow. The result landed inside the company's own 14 to 17 percent guidance range. What matters for this page is the guidance given on the call, which covers the September quarter, which is where the first days of iPhone 18 Pro sales land.
Surprise and Shine
Apple sent the invitations on 26 August 2026, ending eight months of guesswork about the date. The event is Wednesday 9 September at 10:00 Pacific at Apple Park. The tagline is Surprise and Shine, which reads as a foldable joke to anyone who has been following the supply chain since October. Every publication tracking the release-date pattern had narrowed it to 9 or 14 September. Ternus takes over, eight days out
The handover took effect on 1 September 2026. John Ternus is chief executive of Apple, Tim Cook is executive chairman, and the keynote is eight days away. Cook ran the company for fifteen years and hosted every September event of that era. The next one belongs to an engineer who spent his career on the hardware side, which is one way of reading what the board thinks the next decade of Apple is about.
Labor Day falls late, and this year it did not matter
Labor Day fell on 7 September 2026, later than usual. Apple normally holds its iPhone event the week after the holiday, which pointed at Monday 14 September. In 2022 the company went two days after the holiday instead. That single date is why the 2026 forecasts split between two candidates for most of the year, and why every pre-order and delivery estimate carried a week of slack. Ternus opens with the hardware argument
Wednesday 9 September 2026, 10:00 Pacific, at Apple Park. Prerecorded, streamed on apple.com, on YouTube and through the Apple TV app, with hands-on demonstrations for press on the campus afterwards. Tim Cook was in the audience and did not present. He handed the microphone to John Ternus, nine days into the job. Ternus opened on the proposition that the iPhone is where artificial intelligence and hardware meet, and spent his first minutes on Private Cloud Compute rather than on a product. It is a defensible opening for an engineer taking over a hardware company in a software argument, and it was also the part of the keynote that moved nothing. Craig Federighi handled the foldable's software. The variable aperture got a live demonstration. The sequence opened, as it always does, with Shot on iPhone.
iPhone 18 Pro: 1,199 dollars, and the first 2nm phone
Two sizes, 6.3 inches and 6.9. The A20 Pro is Apple's first chip on a 2-nanometre process: six CPU cores, seven GPU cores that Apple puts at up to 40 per cent faster than the A19 Pro, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, so 32 cores on machine learning. The vapour chamber has three times the surface area of last year's and Apple claims up to 40 per cent better sustained performance, which is the number that matters on a phone that throttles. • Camera: 48-megapixel Fusion main with a six-blade variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4, four settings selectable by hand, and around 50 per cent better low-light performance by Apple's measure. New Pro controls expose aperture, shutter speed and white balance directly, with a histogram • Modem: Apple's own C2, in every model. Faster uploads than the C1X, 15 per cent less energy, mmWave in the United States. Qualcomm is out of the Pro iPhone • Wireless: the N1 chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread • Battery: up to 36 hours of video on the Pro and 45 on the Pro Max for the eSIM models, against 33 and 39 last year. Fifty per cent charge in about 15 minutes • Storage: 256GB to 2TB. Colours: black, silver, glacier, burgundy • Price: 1,199 dollars and 1,299 dollars, up 100 from the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max The Dynamic Island is smaller and now carries three Live Activities at once. It is still there, which is the story on the next card but one.
iPhone Duo: the foldable, at 1,999 dollars
Apple's first folding phone is called the iPhone Duo. Not Ultra, not Fold, which is what the supply chain had been calling it for a year. A 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display inside with a nano-texture finish, a 5.4-inch one outside, both with ProMotion, Always On and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. • Build: grade 5 titanium, mirror-polished, with a hinge Apple says is made of more than a hundred components. Ceramic Shield on the back, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. IP68 • Chip: A20 Pro, with a custom vapour chamber and up to 35 per cent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro • Cameras: 48-megapixel Fusion main with 2x telephoto and zero shutter lag, 48-megapixel Fusion ultra wide, Center Stage front camera, and a FaceTime camera under the inner display. 4K120 in Dolby Vision • Unlocking: Touch ID in the side button. Face ID does not fit in a body this thin, so on this one model Apple has retired it • Battery: two cells. Up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 on the outer, 24 hours of mixed use. Half charge in about 20 minutes wired • Storage: 256GB to 2TB. Colours: Star White, Night Sky • Price and dates: from 1,999 dollars. Pre-orders 16 October, on sale 23 October Ternus called it the most transformational change to the iPhone since the original. At 1,999 dollars it came in at the bottom of the range analysts had been quoting all summer, which for a first-generation device in a category Apple is nine years late to is the more interesting decision.
What the leaks got right, and the two they got wrong
Everything on this page from October 2025 onwards was reporting rather than fact. Set against the keynote, it holds up better than it usually does. • Right: the split lineup, called in August 2025. Burgundy is near enough to the dark cherry the colour leaks named. The dual-battery reference found in iOS 27 beta 4 in July was real • Wrong, first: under-display Face ID. The December 2025 roundup on this page led with it and it did not ship. The Dynamic Island shrank and stayed, and now holds three Live Activities • Wrong, second: the split modem. AppleInsider reported in June that international units would carry Apple's C2 while American ones kept Qualcomm. Every unit carries the C2 • Wrong, third: the price. Reporting in late August put the Pro rise at around 300 dollars. It was 100 The pattern is the one this page has shown all year. Supply-chain reporting is reliable about what is being manufactured and unreliable about what Apple has decided. Panels, hinges and process nodes leak because thousands of people handle them. Prices and product names do not, because a dozen people know them.
The rest of the morning: two watches, one set of AirPods
Everything else announced on 9 September pre-orders the same day and ships on 18 September. • Apple Watch Series 12, 399 dollars: the S11 chip and a new health sensing system that samples heart rate every five seconds. Up to 24 hours of battery, ten of outdoor workout. Aluminium with Ceramic Shield 2, ceramic in pearl white and night blue, titanium in radiant gold and natural • Apple Watch Ultra 4, 799 dollars: S11, up to 50 hours of normal use and 45 in extended workout mode, in titanium that Apple says is 3D-printed and 100 per cent recycled. A translucent Ocean Band and a Hermes titanium bracelet arrive with it • AirPods 5, 129 dollars, or 149 with the wireless charging case: the H2 chip, active noise cancellation that Apple puts at removing up to 50 per cent more external noise than the AirPods 4, and an IP57 rating. Four hours of playback with noise cancellation on, or five on the more expensive case, and 20 to 22 hours with the case Not announced, despite appearing on every preview list: an iPad mini, a home hub with a screen, a new Apple TV, a refreshed HomePod mini, and an iPhone Air.
Health gets a longevity tab and a blood test
The Health app gains a Longevity tab this autumn, built around a Health Age metric, movement evaluations that use the iPhone camera together with the Apple Watch, and the perimenopause and menopause tracking announced at WWDC. The part worth noticing is the blood panel. Apple will let users book one for 119 dollars through Quest Diagnostics at roughly 2,000 locations in the United States, and read the results in the Health app. Apple has spent a decade collecting data its own sensors could generate. This is the first time it has sent a customer somewhere else to have a needle put in their arm, and it moves the company from measuring a person to ordering a test on them.
Siri gets a daily limit, and a price to come
The new Siri ships with caps. Apple says daily limits apply to Siri AI, the intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground and the Foundation Cloud models in Shortcuts, and that expanded access will be available for a fee in future. What Apple has not said is what the limits are. Its own wording is that they may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies and other factors, which is a sentence written to avoid committing to a number. Reporting expects the paid tier to sit inside the higher iCloud+ subscriptions rather than being sold on its own. No price and no date have been announced. Apple has metered a system feature for the first time. The iPhone has always been a device you buy once, and Siri has always been something it simply came with.
The market shrugs
Apple closed on 9 September at 315.34 dollars, down 0.28 per cent on the day, at a market capitalisation of about 4.6 trillion dollars. The first foldable in the company's history moved the share price by 88 cents. The reasoning offered afterwards was margin. A 100 dollar rise on the Pro models may not cover rising component costs, a 1,999 dollar foldable in its first year is expensive to build, and the stock was already trading near 36 times forward earnings against a three-year average closer to 30. Ternus's line that this is the best device for artificial intelligence is a claim about the next three years, and the market had already priced three years of it.

iOS 27 ships on 14 September, in English only
Confirmed at the keynote: iOS 27 and watchOS 27 reach the public on Monday 14 September, four days before the phones. The Siri rebuilt at WWDC arrives as a beta, in English only, with additional languages promised for October. Apple shipped the operating system on time and the feature it was built around in a qualified state, which is the second year running that the Siri work has arrived later than the release it was announced in.
Pre-orders on the 12th, phones on the 18th
Confirmed. Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max open at 05:00 Pacific on Friday 12 September, and the phones arrive on Friday 18 September, alongside the Apple Watch Series 12, the Watch Ultra 4 and the AirPods 5. That is the pattern this page has been describing since its first card: keynote, pre-orders that Friday, delivery the Friday after. Four consecutive years now. The one thing that broke the pattern in 2026 is the foldable, which is on its own schedule five weeks behind.
The foldable does slip to October, exactly as reported
The reporting through July said the Duo would be unveiled in September and sold later, and that is what happened. Pre-orders open on 16 October, the phone arrives on 23 October in more than 70 countries, and a second group of markets follows on 30 October. Ming-Chi Kuo's position, that announcement and availability were two different dates, turned out to be the single most accurate call of the cycle. Five weeks separate the keynote from the first Duo in a buyer's hands, and a first production run reported at around 10 million units will decide how long the wait list runs after that.
No standard iPhone 18 in September, as promised in August 2025
Apple announced three phones and none of them was a standard iPhone 18. The split reported by 9to5Mac thirteen months earlier, on the first card of this page, held exactly: the Pro models and the foldable in the autumn, the cheaper models in spring 2027. The iPhone 18 and the budget 18e are still expected early next year. If the split works, Apple gets two demand peaks a year instead of one and stops its cheapest phone competing with its most expensive one in the same week. If it does not, anyone who wanted a new iPhone under a thousand dollars in September 2026 waited half a year for it.
